SmartShot Precision-Guided Mortar (PGM)
Mortars provide immediately responsive organic indirect fires at the Infantry/Armor battalion and below. The 120mm mortar tubes in the inventory of many users fire a high explosive projectile of sufficient size to destroy structures and light armored vehicles. But with an accuracy no better than 150 meters, barrage firings of multiple rounds are needed to suppress a single target, potentially inflicting widespread collateral damage in the process.
Attaching a SmartShot kit to one of these rounds extends its range and provides precision-guidance that enables engagement of point targets with an accuracy of less than 5 meters under all weather conditions in restrictive terrain or urban environments, thereby equipping the ground force commander with the ability to rapidly engage and destroy any point target with a single round while minimizing logistic supply train and curtailing collateral damage.
Assembly Features & System Performance
The SmartShot kit is easily installed on any NATO standard mortar bomb to provide an additional increment in range and enhanced maneuverability for trajectory shaping. It kit is available in the two configurations shown, SS-1 with stock stabilizing fins and SS-2 which incorporates a deploying mid-wing which provides significantly increased range and/or maneuverability. An optional Semi Active Laser (SAL) seeker is available with the SS-2 version. The tables below summarize the subsystems available for the two configurations and the range and accuracy performance of each

System Compatibility
SmartShot SS-1 and SS-2 kits are compatible with all NATO standard 120mm smooth-bore mortar shells including those shown. Leigh can also furnish already-integrated guided rounds in accordance with User requirements.
Both SmartShot SS-1 and SS-2 are compatible with all NATO standard 120mm smooth-bore and rifled mortar tubes including dismount, towed and self-propelled guns.

Concept of Operation (CONOPS)
The SmartShot SS-1 guidance system takes advantage of the projectile’s body and tail lift in order to extend its range and enhance maneuverability for accurate target engagement over a wide range of environmental conditions without the need for meteorological data input.
The addition of the SS-2 unique Razorback wing system greatly amplifies this effect, creating new and important mission opportunities, including:
- Engaging vertical targets in urban environments (see above illustration)
- Skirting horizontal and vertical obstacles obstructing a direct path to the target
- Engaging moving and/or displaced targets
