Development

Despite its small size, Leigh has developed all of the essential engineering tools, both in terms of analysis software and hardware facilities that are essential for the development of the complex systems that the company produces.

Examples include the elements listed below and which are illustrated by the
accompanying photos.

  • Computer-Aided Design
  • Finite Element Stress Analysis
    • Metallic & composite structures
  • Embedded Avionics Design
    • Brushless motor controller design
    • Servo control hardware & software
    • Miniature On-Board Recorders
    • High shock survivable hardware
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Wind Tunnel Testing
    • Wind tunnel model design & instrumentation
    • Subsonic through supersonic testing experience
  • Gun-launched Projectile Shock Testing
  • High performance flight control software
    • PGM and UAV systems
  • Software/Hardware in Loop simulation
  • Flight Testing
    • Air- and ground-launched systems

Manufacturing & Assembly

Leigh occupies 22,000 sq ft (2,050 sq M) of shops and offices in Carlsbad CA. This location is surrounded by numerous mechanical and electronics manufacturing firms and technical specialties to whom Leigh sub-contracts parts & services as required to support and augment Leigh’s internal
manufacturing activities. The latter includes fabrication of key components, final assembly, system integration and testing.

Examples of the types of activities performed in-house are presented in the accompanying images and range from electronic assembly and manufacture of key avionics components such as PGM and UAS flight control units and control actuators to fabrication of advanced composite parts for its SkyEye air vehicles.

Government Support Services

Leigh is eager to leverage its technology and resources to provide low cost turnkey and other support services addressing a range of government mission requirements.  Just a few examples are listed below.

  • Defense Services
    •  Turnkey ISR operations for border/coastal security
    •  Prototype design and testing of new PGM- and UAS-related components & subsystems
  • Commercial Services
    •  Atmospheric contaminant monitoring
    •  Early wildfire detection
    •  Earth resource mapping
    •  Infrastructure monitoring

In cases where foreign governments require local manufacturing content as part of any procurement program, Leigh will support this requirement through co-production and/or co-assembly arrangements with local firms, pending US Government approval.

Corporate Support Services

Leigh is always keen to use its capabilities and technology to support domestic or foreign industry wherever possible, for example:

  • Teaming to capture & execute programs in order to boost probability of success
  • Design support, analysis and testing of components & subsystems
  • Flight control and user interface software development and simulation
  • Wind tunnel and flight test support
