Munition Guidance

SmartShot Extended Range Precision-Guided 120mm Mortar

Mortars provide immediately responsive organic indirect fires at the Infantry/Armor battalion and below. A standard 120mm mortar can destroy structures and light armored vehicles, but with an accuracy no better than 150 meters, barrage firings of multiple rounds are needed to suppress a single target.

Attaching a SmartShot kit to one of these rounds extends its range and provides precision-guidance that enables engagement of point targets with an accuracy of less than 5 meters under all weather conditions in restrictive terrain or urban environments, thereby equipping the ground force commander to rapidly engage and destroy any point target with a single round while minimizing logistic supply train and curtailing collateral damage.

The SmartShot SS-1 guidance system takes advantage of the projectile’s body and tail lift in order to extend its range and enhance maneuverability for accurate target engagement over a wide range of environmental conditions without the need for meteorological data input.

Smart Wing Adaptor Kit (SWAK)

SWAK is a self-contained wing kit that provides all-weather, standoff, precision, autonomous enroute and terminal guidance capability to existing air-launched short range guided and/or unguided (dumb) munitions including general purpose Mk-82/83 and GBU-12/16 series bombs.

The photos below show SWAK kits fitted to Mk-83 1000lb general purpose bombs and Mk-54 torpedoes. In these cases, the SWAK wing-kit provides both stand-off and both en-route and terminal guidance.
